Day Trip Dallas: The George (H.W.) Bush Presidential Library and Museum

Navy Pilot, George Bush, in VT-51 “Avenger,” 1944

Step aside, political affiliations. Take a day trip to the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas.

Set in Aggie country about 190 miles from Dallas, the Bush Library is a gem of modern American history. Fascinating pictures of a young George (and later on, some of “W”) give us a glimpse into a startling humanity forgotten in recent years.

George H. W. Bush, approximately age 12 (circa 1936)

George Herbert Walker Bush was born on June 12, 1924, in Milton, Massachusetts, to Dorothy Walker Bush and Prescott Bush (Republican Senator Connecticut 1952-1962). H.W. graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts on his 18th birthday, June 12, 1942. That same day, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 2nd Class (World War II).

Barbara Pierce

George married Barbara Pierce on January 6, 1945. After WWII ended, he entered Yale University where he graduated with honors in 1948 with a degree in econonmics.

Things you might not know:

* George was the youngest naval aviator in the US Navy at the time>>
* H.W.’s plane was shot down on September 2, 1944 in Chichi-Jima, and two of his crewmates (John Delaney and Lt. Ted White) were killed>>
* George and Barbara’s daughter, Pauline Robinson (Robin) Bush (Born on December 20, 1949) died in 1953 of leukemia>>
* And much more

    For all the politics of bickering we see of late, visiting the Bush Library is a reminder that when it comes down to it, even the President puts his pants on one leg at a time.
    “A President is neither prince nor pope, and I don’t seek a window on men’s souls. In fact, I yearn for a greater tolerance, an easy-goingness about each other’s attitudes and way of life.” –George H.W. Bush
