Ever wonder why Oktoberfest begins in September? Known as the largest “Volksfest” (People’s Fair) in the world, Oktoberfest originally began in October of 1810 in Munich, Germany to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen (namesake of the Theresienwiese festival grounds in Germany). They’d organized a great party, including quite the horse race. Since then, The Munich Oktoberfest gave everyone an excuse to get together and celebrate. That is, meet friends and drink lots of beer! Rumor has it that since beer was made in March, by September-October, the old stocks of beer needed to be disposed of to make room for the new brew made after harvest. Add that “chore” to better weather and new Oktoberfest activities, the festival in Munich was moved back to late September through early October. (Everyone generally follows Germany’s lead on that one!)
